To Care For the Baseboards

Baseboards catch the eye. It's just in their nature to do that. That's why you get that unappealing feeling when looking at older, decrepit baseboards, or when you spot some pulling away from their wall. It's just unsightly. Baseboards need intentional care! Here's how we advise treating them.

Getting it Done

1. Clean, clean, clean! A vinegar-based solution is effective enough. You're making sure the baseboards are as decontaminated as possible.

2. Secure it. Those baseboards trying to break free of their wall? Caulk them. Any odd protrusions? Sand them. When you're done, the baseboards should be smooth and stainless.

3. Tape cover. Now comes the time-consuming part. Grab some painter's tape and run it along ALL. THE. BASEBOARDS. A fair amount should go under the baseboards as much as possible to effectively prevent spilled drops from staining your floor.

4. PAINT! The fun part! It's your choice of paint (we recommend white in most cases). Crack open the can, dip your brush in lightly, and go to town! You're not using an excessive amount of paint here. Too much, and not even your tape will be able to save you. Go slowly and intentionally, and you'll have a beautiful product by the time you're done!

A Final Word

We won't lie. It's time-consuming. Very much so. It goes a lot slower than rolling walls. It is something that requires a strong will and refined patience. If you rush it, you'll ruin it. You wouldn't think that for painting, we know, but that's what it is! There's a reason it's an art, but if you commit diligently to it, you won't have a single regret by the time you're through.

Unless, of course, you finish up and realize you chose the wrong color. Please don't do that.
